About GROD
The Grand Rapids Oral Deaf Program (GROD) is a program dedicated to teaching children with hearing loss to listen and speak. The GROD Program is located within the Grand Rapids Public School System and serves the entire Kent Intermediate School District. The GROD Program, established in 1899, is nationally recognized for its excellence in auditory-oral education. Several children attending the program have moved to Kent County from other states because of the program's superior reputation and history of success. The mission of GROD is to enable children with hearing loss to gain the skills needed to perform in the classroom at the same level as their normal hearing peers and to become independent, speaking members of mainstream society.
- The GROD Program has a record of mainstreaming over 75% of their students into their neighborhood schools by the age of six.
- It is estimated the GROD Program saves taxpayers more than $1 million dollars every year in special education expenditures through early mainstreaming.
- The National Alexander Graham Bell Association has selected GROD as its Program of the Year twice - in 1979 and 1997.
The GROD Program services children from many different cultures, incomes, and with multiple disabilities, starting with an infant/parent home program and progressing to in school instruction. In addition to highly trained hearing impaired teachers, the GROD Program also employs a physical therapist, occupational therapist, social worker, translator and audiologist to meet the needs of our diverse student body.
